Mr. Rodney Gore (rodneygore@kappaleaguechicago.org), as Director of the Kappa Leadership Institute – Chicago, he continues to work diligently to ensure that the institute provides the best that it can offer to every Kappa Leaguer. Mr. Gore has extensive work experience in the non-profit environment working primarily with opportunities geared toward teenage youth (K9 – K12) and has worked in the academic advising of teenage youth since August of 1999. Since August of 2003, he has served as the Director of the Kappa Leadership Institute – Chicago and within that time frame he has developed the institute into what is now referred to as ““one of Chicago’s most successful leadership & academic mentoring programs.” In addition to his non-profit positions, he has lead management and sales teams in delivering superior business results. With over fifteen years in the executive management, sales, and service divisions for several fortune 500 corporations, Mr. Gore has a thorough understanding of what it takes to create, develop, and leverage premier relationships to capture opportunities to succeed in a demanding and forever changing work environment.
Mr. Gore is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, DC, with a BA in Communications with an emphasis in Marketing and a graduate of the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business with his MBA. He attended Lindblom High School in Chicago where he was selected as a National Merit Finalist after he obtained a 1550 on the SAT Exam. He also scored a 34 on the ACT Exam which placed him in the 98th percentile nationally.
Mr. Gore is committed to seeing that every student in the Kappa League program successfully matriculates to college, is properly prepared for college, obtains the financial resources needed to attend college, and maintains the academic standards needed to gain admissions to the college or university of the Kappa Leaguer's choice. He personally serves as the Academic Advisor specifically for the junior Kappa League students. As the Academic Advisor to the juniors he is in charge of their SAT & ACT preparation, and coordination of college tours. Along with Dr. Robinson, he serves as a key liaison to college admission directors and admission representatives.
Dr. Derek Robinson is the Assistant Director of the Kappa Leadership Institute - Chicago. Dr. Robinson a certified medical doctor who completed his MD at Howard University in Washington, DC., after having completed his undergraduate studies at Xavier University in New Orleans. He is also a graduate from the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business where he completed his MBA (Masters of Business Administration). Not only does Dr. Robinson devote his time to the Kappa Leadership Institute - Chicago, he also works as a full-time emergency medicine physician. Dr. Robinson also holds a National position with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., as he is the National Achievement Academy Chairman for the Fraternity. Dr. Robinson’s main responsibility as Assistant Director of the Institute is to work with Kappa Leaguers in the program who are seniors. He is in charge of all matters related to ensuring the successful matriculation of each senior to college and is a key liaison to college admission directors and admission representatives. His responsibilities also include working with senior students on their college application and college essay preparation; their financial aid and scholarship readiness preparation; and much more.
Dr. Allen Smith is the "Head Academic Advisor and Course Curriculum Coordinator.” Before retiring, Dr. Smith, served as the Superintendent of Schools for the Bellwood School District and also served as the Director of Guidance and Counseling for Chicago Public Schools. Dr. Smith is an Academic Advisor specifically for freshmen students in the program. Dr. Smith is also in charge of “course curriculum advising” for all Kappa Leaguers. This aspect of his academic advising is key to ensure that each Kappa Leaguers is given the proper guidance in terms of the courses they should be taking at their respective high schools that will assist them in the proper preparation for their intended studies in college and preparation for their successful transition to the academic environment at college.
Mr. Ileo Lott is also an Academic Advisor. Mr. Lott’s specific title is “Academic Advisor and Tutoring Coordinator.” He is in charge of the tutoring aspect of our program. The institute has noticed that although every Kappa Leaguers is considered amongst the “best and brightest” that the surrounding high schools have to offer, the majority of them write very poorly. Thus, the Kappa Leadership Institute has raged what it we considers a “full attack” on this aspect of each Kappa Leaguer’s academic ability in hopes that the institute can assist each Kappa Leaguer in making an effective change in their writing style and grammatical structure. Tutoring is a mandatory requirement for every member of the Kappa League program and tutoring sessions are held on Saturday mornings.
Mr. Gary Walker is another one of our Academic Advisors. Mr. Walkers’ specific title is “Admission Counselor – Private, Charter, and Catholic Schools.” As you can infer from his title, he is mainly in charge of our admission recruitment for new members to the institute that attend a private, charter, or catholic high school. He is also an Academic Strand Advisor that works with students in the Business Strand. Mr. Walker is a graduate of Tennessee State University.
Mr. Kevin Scott is another one of the Academic Advisors for the Kappa Leadership Institute - Chicago. Mr. Scott’s specific title is “Admission Counselor – Public Schools.” He is in charge of all admission recruitment and marketing as it relates to attracting new members to the program who attend public high schools. Mr. Scott is also an Academic Strand Advisor that works specifically students in our Law/Liberal Arts Strand. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Mr. Collin Milhouse, Jr. is another Academic Advisor for the program. Mr. Milhouse's’ specific title is “Academic Advisor and Scholarship Coordinator.” He is in charge of coordinating and seeking out all scholarships and information pertaining to scholarships that will assist our Kappa Leaguers and their parents/guardians with finding funding to finance college expenses. Mr. Milhouse is also one of our Academic Strand Advisors that works specifically with students in our Biological & Environmental Science Strand. Mr. Milhouse completed both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Norfolk State University. He is a retiree from the United States Navy and the federal government and was employed as a Licensed School Guidance Counselor in the Chesapeake, Virginia Public Schools system.
Mr. James Moore is also an Academic Advisor for the program. Mr. Moore’ specific title is “Academic Advisor and Community Service Coordinator.” He is in charge of coordinating all events pertaining to the institute's involvement with service learning projects. Mr. Moore is also an Academic Strand Advisor that works specifically our students in the Engineering/Architecture Strand.
The staff of the Kappa Leadership Institute – Chicago and the Board of the Edward G. Irvin Foundation are truly working hard to make every Kappa League student's involvement with the Kappa League program a rewarding experience.
